Machinery Ltd, one of Finland’s leading suppliers of industrial machines and equipment, is restructuring its business and separating its Machine tools operations into a new company, Machinery MT Ltd. The reorganization will take effect on October 1, 2024, after which Machinery MT Ltd will begin operations as an independent company, separate from Machinery Ltd.

The ownership structure will remain unchanged after the reorganization, and Machinery MT Oy will operate as part of the Boreo Group, alongside Machinery Ltd and other sister companies within the Boreo Group. After the reorganization, Machinery Ltd will focus on two main business areas: Construction equipment and Power generation. The new company, Machinery MT Ltd, will specialize in the sales and maintenance of machine tools, as well as their consumables and spare parts. As part of the transition, Silja Frigård, former Director of the Machine tool deparment, will take on the role of CEO of Machinery MT Ltd, while Juha-Pekka Honkanen, former Director of the Power Generation department, will take on the role of CEO of Machinery Ltd.

Why so?

“This reorganization is an important step for the growth and development of both of our business areas,” commented Juha-Pekka Honkanen, CEO of Machinery Ltd. “The division allows both companies to focus on their core competencies, improving customer service and strengthening their market positions. Additionally, we will be better positioned to leverage the synergies between the construction and power generation sectors.”

The establishment of Machinery MT Oy brings significant advantages to customers in the machine tool sector. The company’s name is derived from the words “Machinery Machine Tools” and its Finnish equivalent “metallintyöstö” (metalworking). Machinery MT Ltd will become a smaller and more agile organization, with a business model that enables faster decision-making, closer customer relationships, and more customer-centric solutions.

“Machinery MT Oy’s goal is to become the leading supplier of machine tools in Finland, providing in-depth expertise and top-tier service to its customers. The entire Machine tools deparment’s staff will transfer to the new company, along with the familiar operating methods and machinery representations,” says Silja Frigård, CEO of Machinery MT Ltd. “Our new structure makes us more agile and better equipped to meet our customers’ evolving needs.”

Both companies will continue to foster strong customer relationships and offer high-quality products and services. The purpose of this reorganization is to create a clearer and more focused business environment that benefits customers, machine manufacturers, and the company’s staff alike.

Boreo is simplifying its organizational structure by merging its current Technical Trade and Heavy Equipment business areas into a single Technical Trade business area, effective January 1, 2024. The new organizational structure aligns more closely with Boreo’s strategy, which focuses on acquiring profitable companies with high capital returns for long-term ownership. As a result of this consolidation, an agreement has been reached to terminate the employment relationship with Janne Silvennoinen, Director of Boreo’s Technical Trade business area and CEO of Machinery.

As part of this change, Machinery Oy’s metalworking business will be divested into a separate company. The entire personnel of the current metalworking business will transition to the new company, which will continue its operations at the Pirkkala facility opened last year. Silja Frigård, the current business area director of Machinery’s metalworking business, will assume the role of CEO for the new company. Machinery’s power transmission and construction sectors will continue their operations at the current Ansatie facility in Vantaa. After the spin-off, the CEO of Machinery Oy will be Juha-Pekka Honkanen, the current business area director of the power transmission business. The spin-off is expected to be completed in the first half of 2024, and until then, the interim CEO of Machinery Oy will be Aku Rumpunen, Boreo’s CFO.

“With the future companies focusing on serving their respective customer bases, we will be able to provide even more skilled services that address the specific needs of our customers. With this change, the separated businesses will also be more agile in responding to the constantly evolving market demands,” commented Silja Frigård on the upcoming change.

The commencement of operations for the new business entity will be announced separately.

The Spanish machine manufacturer Tronzadoras has been producing high-quality aluminum circular saws since 1972, which are also suitable for cutting copper and PVC. The production of machines began with small manual circular saws and has expanded over the years into a comprehensive product range that now includes fully automatic saws, measuring stops, and efficient saw-drill-tapping units. In Finland, Tronzadoras is represented by Machinery Oy, a company with over 110 years of experience in the technical trade industry, and the representation was transferred to Machinery when Keyway merged with Machinery in 2019.

Today, Tronzadoras is one of the leading machine manufacturers in Spain, and their saws are supplied not only to Europe but also to markets in America, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Their main headquarters are located in Barcelona, Spain, where they have their showrooms, offices, and design and spare parts services. The machines themselves are manufactured in Monforte de Lemos on the west coast of Spain, where approximately 2,000-2,500 machines are produced annually. In addition to traditional circular saws, Tronzadoras’ innovative product design has led to the creation of fully automatic saws that can be equipped with 1-3 drill heads, allowing for precise and fast cutting, drilling, and tapping with a single compact and high-quality machine.

“I have been selling Tronzadoras saws for about ten years, and it has always been very rewarding because the quality of their machines is excellent, the price is very customer-friendly, and the customer service is good and fast. With the above-mentioned aspects, we have gained many satisfied Tronzadoras customers, and when customers are satisfied, I am too,” comments Katri Manninen, Product Manager for Sawing at Machinery.

A&M Välilehto Chose Tronzadoras Based on Positive User Experiences

A&M Välilehto’s business model is subcontracting and contract manufacturing. They have been operating in Luoma-aho, Alajärvi since 2011, and before that, they worked part-time from Soini. A&M Välilehto is part of the aluminum competence network La Alucenter, through which almost all aluminum-related work can be done. Work is completed quickly, partly because A&M Välilehto’s profile supplier, Mäkelä Alu, is located on the same street across the road. A&M Välilehto punches, saws, welds, vibratory grinds, assembles, and makes special packaging for these profiles. Their products are distributed to Finland and other parts of Europe and America through their main suppliers.

This year, A&M Välilehto invested in a new Tronzadoras saw-drill unit. They chose the machine based on previous positive user experiences with saws from the same manufacturer. The goal of this new investment is to streamline the fast cutting, drilling, and tapping of small parts. “We chose Tronza because we have long-term and positive user experiences with saws from the same manufacturer,” commented Ari Välilehto.

Baltic Yachts has once again taken a step forward in sailboat design by introducing the new BALTIC 110 CUSTOM yacht, which was launched in the summer of 2023 after a 2.5-year construction project. The 110-foot carbon sloop is designed to offer unforgettable cruising experiences around the world. This project showcases Baltic Yachts’ continuous commitment to innovation and sustainable sailing, providing unforgettable experiences and enjoyment for those who want to explore the world by sail.

One significant innovation in this vessel is its electric powertrain. The boat is powered by an electric motor, enabling smooth and silent movement. Additionally, the motor converts into a generator using the boat’s propeller while sailing, generating electricity while the boat moves on windy seas. This increases the boat’s energy efficiency and reduces reliance on traditional fuel. Two Cummins B4.5 marine engines power the generators. The electric propulsion system, along with the Cummins engines, is exceptionally quiet, enhancing the comfort of the sailing experience.

The choice of these engines considered power, size, and weight. The goal was to achieve 129 kW of power as efficiently as possible with a compact engine. Given these criteria, the Cummins B4.5 engine proved to be the right choice. During testing, the engine performed excellently, even in overload situations, meeting the project’s requirements.

“All in all, it has gone very well. Just based on how the engine sounds. The turbo whistles just right, and you can tell there’s no cause for concern. After this experience, if we need 130 kW engines, this is a very good option,” commented Kim Kolam, Baltic Yachts’ electrical systems engineer.

These are the first Cummins B4.5 engines to be put into customer use. Before this, they were only used for Cummins’ own testing. After a short trial, Baltic Yachts has been so satisfied that they will also use the Cummins B4.5 in their next project. The engines have undergone successful tests, and after nearly a day of testing, they are confirmed to operate as expected. The cooperation between Baltic Yachts and Machinery has been very smooth, and Machinery has provided the necessary expertise for the project.

“It has been great to be a part of such an advanced construction project and deliver the first Cummins B4.5 engines to customers,” commented Petri Flinkman, Machinery’s sales and application engineer. He continued, “These engines offer a lot of power in a compact package, which is why they were perfect for this project.”

The technical specifications of the BALTIC 110 CUSTOM yacht are also impressive. It has an overall length of 33.50 meters, a width of 7.60 meters, and a draft ranging from 3.80 to 5.80 meters. The displacement is 95 tons. These features, combined with the efficiency and environmental friendliness offered by the powertrain, make this yacht an excellent choice for cruising.

During the past summer, PTH-Metalli Oy had two Meban band saws installed and put into operation: the robust Meba PRO 300-A vertical guided automatic saw, ideal for efficient and reliable batch cutting of larger materials, and the MebaSwing 260 DG-Hs semi-automatic miter saw for cutting profiles and tube miter angles.

The German band saw manufacturer MEBA offers saws for all cutting needs, and the high quality of their products ensures easy, reliable, and trouble-free cutting year after year.

“When we set out to update our cutting equipment, it was clear that we needed two different saws with specific features. Our goal was to find a single supplier for both saws, preferably from the same brand. This will make maintenance and upkeep easier in the future with a single, consistent supplier. We found suitable saws from MEBA, represented by Machinery Oy. Furthermore, the easy programming and operation of the saws received positive feedback from our future users,” commented Christian Westerlund, Procurement Manager at PTH-Metalli.

PTH-Metalli is a machine shop located in Porvoo, Finland, with a history of over 70 years, specializing in subcontract manufacturing. Their current premises are in the Tarmola industrial area at Veckjärventie 1. Their versatile machinery covers all essential stages of production, from laser and plasma cutting to robot welding, multi-sided machining, powder coating, and final assembly.

MACHINERY INVESTS IN SAW COMMISSIONING – TRAINING IS OFTEN PROVIDED ON SITE BY KATRI MANNINEN

In many cases, the commissioning of machines is a multi-stage process, where comprehensive training is essential. Machinery wants to ensure that the machines they supply are used smoothly for as long as possible.

This is also the case with the saws. Machinery’s saw professional, Katri Manninen, often provides training for Meba saws at customers’ premises. This approach is taken to ensure the long service life of the machines by ensuring that the saws are used correctly, and any potential issues can be addressed quickly. Additionally, on-site training allows customers to ask questions and receive guidance tailored to their specific needs.

Koulutustilanne Meba

“During training, we go through the general features of the saw with the saw operators and then learn about programming and other usage aspects. Since Meba’s programming is simply excellent, we quickly move on to the most interesting part of the training day: putting the saw to work and watching the chips fly.

I always find these training sessions beneficial because I get to know the saw operators and gain a better understanding of the types of cuts they perform. I always learn something new myself too. When the training is completed, what warms my heart the most is seeing that the customer is satisfied with their new saw and how well Meba performs,” says Katri Manninen.

At the end of last year, Kymen Vesi invested in a Kohler J200 backup power generator and a Verso200 transfer switch to safeguard critical operations in case of potential power outages.

The choice of this backup power generator was made, among other reasons, due to its good availability. The installation went well, although there was a minor coolant leak in the machine during the initial uses.

Verso200 verkonvaihtokytkin

However, the leak was quickly fixed by Machinery’s maintenance team.

“The cooperation with Machinery has been excellent, and we have been satisfied with the investment,” commented Pumping Station Engineer Panu Räsänen from Kymen Vesi.

“In late July 2023, the backup power generator was put to the test when there was a power outage of just over an hour in Kymen Vesi’s service area. During this time, the backup power generator supplied electricity to the sewer pumping station along the transmission line without any issues. Prolonged power outages in the wastewater sector can result in wastewater overflows into the environment, water bodies, and in the worst case, into groundwater areas and customers’ properties. Primarily, backup power generators are used to ensure the continuity of water distribution, wastewater treatment plants, and critical wastewater pumping stations,” Panu explains.

You can find a wide range of backup power generators in our product range, from standard models to customized backup power solutions.

Dinolift Niigata

Dinolift Oy, a personnel lift manufacturer based in Loimaa, has invested in the improvement of its production with the Niigata HN1000-S horizontal machining center supplied by Machinery. This machine is the flagship model of the Japanese manufacturer Niigata, which has a history spanning nearly 100 years.

Dinolift began to consider the acquisition of a new machining center in 2020, but the project was postponed by a couple of years due to other significant investments within the company. In 2022, the project was revisited.

“An upright drilling machine would not have been suitable for our needs because, for example, the tool change is much faster in a horizontal machining center. Niigata is a new acquaintance in our production, but we have had many positive experiences with Japanese brands – and Niigata represents the highest quality among them. Niigata convinced us also because it focuses exclusively on the production of horizontal machining centers,” explains Tuomas Heilala, Head of Method Development.

“We considered the purchase from among three Japanese brands. The key factor in the selection was the large size of the parts we machine, to which Niigata responded with the best Y-movement. The specifications of the machine were also desirable, and Niigata’s pallet change station is an open space that suits us. Niigata’s Fanuc control system was also on the wish list of our operators. Niigata’s price was right from the start, and the machine’s good references were convincing. The choice of the machine has proven to be a good one in practice, and, for example, the machine’s frame feels very sturdy,” Heilala elaborates on the selection of Niigata.

Dinolift placed the order with Niigata in early autumn 2022, and the machine was put into production in late August-September this year. “The process from the quotation stage to the machine’s delivery went smoothly through Machinery, and the installation schedule was adhered to without delay. Also, Machinery’s after-sales services have impressed us from the very beginning; Asko Silvala in the service department is a highly competent guy, and we have strong faith in Machinery’s service operations,” Heilala evaluates.

NIIGATA HN1000-S FLAGSHIP MODEL

Japanese manufacturer Niigata started its operations in 1904. Their first machines were lathes. The first NC-controlled horizontal machining center was produced in 1972. Today, the main product group is specifically horizontal machining centers, with several product lines available to meet customer needs.

Dinolift’s new machine is the horizontal machining center NIIGATA HN1000-S with Fanuc 31i-B control. The HN series is Niigata’s oldest and most popular machine model, with over 2800 units delivered. The HN-S development version is designed for high efficiency and precision work without sacrificing sturdiness. It is currently Niigata’s flagship model and meets the machining needs of most customers. The machine has a pallet size of 1,000 x 1,000 mm and a pallet load capacity of 3,500 kg. According to Kari Pirttilä, who sold the machine to Dinolift, it has the largest travel dimensions in its class: X-2030 mm, Y-1650 mm, and Z-1200 mm.

An external pallet station at ground level facilitates the handling of large-sized parts and ensures user safety. Niigata HN1000-S is a so-called hybrid model, with X- and Z-linear guides and a Y-sliding guide that enables high speed movements without compromising stability. Niigata’s Monitor Ace V2 tool management system allows the definition and monitoring of the processing values and tool life of individual tools during machining. Dinolift’s Niigata is equipped with an 80-tool magazine.

The machine spindle has a gearbox and is designed for heavy machining: power of 37/30 kW, a maximum speed of 6,000 rpm, and a torque of 1200 Nm. Special attention has also been paid to chip removal from the work area and guide protection at high speeds.

One setup for a finished part

“With our new Niigata, we secure the majority of our parts’ machining possibilities, and we can machine all parts under two meters with this machine. The machine is, in part, a replacement investment, and after this investment, no part depends on a single machine. But Niigata also creates many new possibilities, especially in design. We also gain a lot more efficient machine time since we can load the pallets outside the machine in advance. Production efficiency is also increased because we can now complete parts with a single setup that previously required two setups,” Heilala summarizes the opportunities opened by Niigata.

Towards Unmanned Operations with Niigata

“Our production runs in two shifts, and so does this new Niigata. At the same time, when the machine was installed, we transitioned to remote programming. As a result, we gain more efficient machine time. Niigata also has the option of an FMS system, and we plan to use this option in the near future. This will allow us to utilize the machine’s efficiency to the maximum in a third unmanned night shift. This is possible due to tool monitoring systems and other features in Niigata,” Heilala highlights future plans.

“In addition to Niigata, we have invested heavily in production development and automation. Automation of welding using the FMS system, an automatic wash line in the surface treatment department, and a surface treatment robot in the paint shop are part of our upcoming acquisitions.”

Located in Sysmä, the Leenharju Water Cooperative has been ensuring water distribution to properties in the area for years with the J044 backup power generator supplied by Machinery.

“Leenharjun Water Cooperative was founded in Sysmä in 1999 after the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment identified a location with first-class water. Today, Leenharjun Water Cooperative supplies water to several smaller villages. Initially, the water distribution of Leenharjun Water Cooperative was associated with about 50 properties, and the total length of water pipes was about 40 kilometers. Over time, more properties have joined, and now water is supplied to around 110 properties, and the length of the water pipes has increased to about 50 kilometers. There are also farms in the area with dairy cattle that require water around the clock,” says Jyri-Pekka Schildt, Chairman of the Water Cooperative’s Board.

A decision was made to acquire a fixed backup power generator because there had been a significant number of power outages in the sparsely populated area. They had been trying to cope with long power outages using portable backup generators, but it was found to be cumbersome. Short power outages were not being addressed in a timely manner. Even short power outages affect water pressure. Therefore, they wanted to secure water distribution with a permanent solution that would prevent any interruptions in the power supply.

At the beginning of the investment decision, options were considered with the exclusion of gasoline-powered alternatives from the outset. Therefore, a diesel-powered backup generator seemed like a potential choice. The decision was made to acquire the backup power generator from Machinery because Machinery’s range included diesel-powered options equipped with John Deere engines, which stood out favorably. John Deere engines were known for their reliability and longevity. In addition, Machinery, as a major player, and its professional sales staff tilted the decision towards this particular machine. The generator was also powerful enough for their needs.

The installation of the backup power generator in Leenharju’s Water Cooperative took a while because originally, they did not order a ready-made container installation and, contrary to the original plans, they wanted the backup power generator to be placed in a separate space from the water intake.

“After the backup power generator had been standing in the shed for a while, we decided to contact Machinery’s partner, A.Repo, who quickly installed the backup power generator in a container. After the container installation, the backup power generator was connected, and it was placed in a separate room from the water intake. If I were ordering a backup power generator now, I would go for the complete delivery right away. The container has fire safety protection and everything is ready,” says Jyri-Pekka.

“The cooperation with Machinery has gone well. Machinery’s salespeople are professional, and Machinery is a reliable operator that also provides maintenance services, which we have also used. Machinery’s technicians have serviced the generator to ensure that it works whenever needed. The fact that I invested in a larger Machinery backup power generator through another company also shows that I have been satisfied with the investment. Now, we can provide tap water to properties in all situations, even during power outages,” Jyri-Pekka concludes.

Machinery offers a wide range of backup power generators in its product range, from standard models to larger and customized backup power solutions. Additionally, portable backup power generators are also available in our range.
